ABCinema started with a simple question: why should a small-town family have to leave town—or spend multiplex prices—to have a memorable night at the movies?

Corey and Barb Affolder’s family was visiting another small Indiana town when they twice couldn’t get into the movie they wanted to see. Over ice cream afterward, they sketched out an idea for something Decatur had been missing: a movie experience worth getting excited about close to home.
They converted space at 130 W. Monroe Street into a theater and opened ABCinema in 2017. From the beginning, the goal was a genuine wow factor without pricing families out of the experience.
THE “4D WITHOUT THE GLASSES” IDEA.
ABCinema’s early design story described surround sound paired with seating installed over a hollow wood floor so audiences could physically feel some of the movie’s impact. That idea captures the theater well: intentionally small-town, but deliberately more immersive than customers might expect.
