VEHICLE HEALTH

Maintenance by mileage. Warning signs by urgency.

One black-and-yellow system for maintenance, warning signs, and the question drivers actually have: “Can this wait?”

MILEAGE MILESTONES

Use mileage as a conversation starter, not a universal parts list.

Exact service requirements vary by year, make, model, engine, driving conditions, and previous maintenance. The manufacturer schedule remains the primary reference.

5K–10K

Oil/service interval as applicable, tire condition, fluids, lights, filters, visible leaks.

30K

Fluids and filters, brakes, tires, steering/suspension, battery/charging, service history.

60K

Age-sensitive fluids, ignition items, belts, cooling, drivetrain, and wear items.

90K

Deferred maintenance, leaks, suspension wear, cooling-system age, drivability history.

120K+

Condition and records matter more than a one-size-fits-all package.

URGENCY GUIDE

Use the same yellow signal language for urgency—not a rainbow of status colors.

STOP / SAFETY FIRST

Overheating, oil-pressure warning, major brake-pedal change, smoke, fuel smell, severe tire damage, sudden steering-control loss, or a flashing check-engine light with poor running.

Action: stop when safe and arrange assistance if continuing to drive seems unsafe.

BOOK SOON

New brake noise, steering looseness, recurring warning lights, coolant loss, worsening vibration, slow starts, fluid leaks, or uneven tire wear.

Action: schedule inspection before the symptom becomes more severe or expensive.

MONITOR + MENTION

Small intermittent noises, minor vibration, a change in fuel economy, a rattle, or a symptom that only happens at one speed or temperature.

Action: note when it happens and mention it at the next service visit.

BEFORE A ROAD TRIP

Five minutes of checking beats discovering it three states away.

  • Tire pressure and visible condition
  • Oil level and overdue service
  • Coolant level when safe to check
  • Battery/start behavior
  • Lights and wipers
  • Any warning light you’ve been postponing

A WARNING LIGHT IS INFORMATION. A FLASHING OR SAFETY-CRITICAL WARNING CAN BE AN INSTRUCTION.
